Basic Motor Kit Installation Instructions

Installing the Cyclone kit requires basic mechanical skills and a few specialized bicycle tools. Detailed instructions are included with each kit. Photos below are for general information only. Here are the basic steps:

  • Use a crank removal tool to take off the cranks.
  • Replace the original cranks with those supplied in the kit - this includes the new freewheeling chainring.
  • If cables pass under the bottom bracket, get them loose and reroute them out of the way.
  • With the crank reassembled, mount the motor to the bike with the universal bracket.
  • If required, use a chain breaker to open the chain and add several links for proper deraileur operation.
  • Align the motor so the sprocket is exactly in line with the chainring.
  • Mount the throttle to the handlebars - switch the gear shifter to the left, mount the throttle on the right.
  • Install the new brake handles with the motor cutoff switches built in. This is a necessary safety device!
  • Mount the batteries - a rear rack is great for this purpose.
  • Route all wiring neatly and use tie-wraps to secure it to the frame.
  • Plug everything in and double-check your work before testing the bike.
  • Make sure the batteries are fully charged then go have some FUN !

  • big-picture

This folding bike is just an example of how our DIY kits work. Cyclone kits will work with single-speed bikes, with 6-8 speed deraileur/cassette bikes and with internal shift rear hubs - 3 speed or even 21 speed units like the SRAM DualDrive.
